The Purpose of a Spacer Bar

A spacer bar is a critical component within insulated glass units (IGUs), used to separate the panes of glass and create the insulating cavity between them. This cavity plays a key role in improving thermal performance and energy efficiency in modern glazing.

Spacer bars also contain a desiccant material, which absorbs any moisture trapped within the sealed unit. Small perforations along the spacer bar allow the desiccant to effectively remove water vapour, helping to prevent internal condensation and maintain long-term clarity and performance.

Construction & Design

Spacer bars are manufactured into a frame that sits between the glass panes. The frame is slightly smaller than the glass unit, allowing the perimeter sealant to bond securely around the edges.

Key construction features include:

  • Precision-cut spacer bars sized to each unit
  • Corner keys used to connect joints seamlessly
  • A concealed internal structure for a clean, professional finish

This ensures both structural integrity and consistent performance across all sealed units.

Warm Edge Spacer Bars

Warm edge spacer bars are designed to improve thermal efficiency at the edge of the glass unit, the area where the most heat loss occurs.

Often referred to as a thermal break, warm edge technology:

  • Reduces heat transfer around the perimeter of the unit
  • Helps lower the overall U-values of windows
  • Minimises the risk of condensation forming at the glass edge

Thermo Plastic Spacer Bar

Regency Glass uses advanced TPS® (Thermo Plastic Spacer) technology as a high-performance alternative to traditional spacer bars in our fully automated TGU production lines.

TPS® acts as both:

  • A spacer system maintaining the cavity between panes
  • A primary sealant, enhancing durability and gas retention

Applied using a fully automated robotic process, TPS® offers:

  • Continuous, precise application
  • Automatic adjustment to suit varying unit thicknesses
  • Highly accurate cavity widths, even with laminated glass configurations
  • Improved thermal insulation and reduced heat loss
  • Excellent resistance to condensation

This advanced system supports high-performance glazing solutions, including Regency Triple featuring Corning® Enlighten™ Glass, delivering industry-leading energy efficiency.
