Sealant

Achieving an airtight seal

Sealant is applied around the edge of the glazing to the back of the recessed spacer bar to achieve an airtight seal. Regency manufactures using a dual seal system. This consists of a primary sealant, PIB—polyisobutylene, and a polysulphide two-part secondary sealant.

Dual seal of protection

The primary seal, Polyisobutylene - PIB, is applied to the edge of the spacer tube and does two things:

  1. Holds the two panes of glass together whilst the glass travels down the production line.
  2. When applied correctly, it provides the primary seal between the glass and the spacer frame, sealing the cavity space from the external atmosphere and reducing gas loss to a minimum.

The secondary seal, polysulphide, is then applied filling the recess behind the spacer bar to the edge of the glass. This gives an additional seal and additional structural integrity to the sealed unit.

This system provides two seals of protection. This is recognised as a superior unit to ‘old’ single-sealed units.
